How It Works

Steps for Organizations

1. Set up your organization. Contact HoopsRef to set up your organization and administrator access. You can choose an available assessment (for example, general or high school rules) or request a customized assessment based on your organization’s rules. We’ll discuss other options, including whether to require Virtual Monitoring.
2. Direct referees to the assessment. Participants create an account or sign in, select the assessment you have arranged, and answer 20 randomized questions within 15 minutes. Afterward, they can review their score, star rating, their responses, the correct answers, and explanations. They can also download their Certificate of Achievement.
3. Review results and plan training. Review individual results and group performance by category and rules concept, explore suggested training priorities, and download the results into a spreadsheet.

General Information

Certificates

A HoopsRef Certificate of Achievement records an assessment result; it is not an official referee certification. If the assessment is completed without Virtual Monitoring, the certificate states: Assessment completed without Virtual Monitoring.

Cell phones and tablets

The HoopsRef Assessment can be taken on a phone or tablet. Virtual Monitoring is automatically off on phones and tablets. Participants may still earn a Certificate of Achievement by answering at least one question correctly; the certificate will include the statement above. Organization assessments that require Virtual Monitoring must be taken on a supported computer.

Virtual Monitoring

Virtual Monitoring monitors for possible outside assistance during the assessment. It is an option for assessments that do not require it; it does not guarantee that outside assistance is prevented or prove that none occurred.

• When enabled, the assessment uses fullscreen mode, camera-based face and attention checks, and microphone-based room-noise checks.
• The microphone detects sustained room noise but does not record audio. Participants should take the assessment alone in a quiet room and keep sound on to hear reminders.
• Five still assessment snapshots are saved with the HoopsRef Assessment and placed on the test-taker’s certificate. These snapshots allow administrators reviewing the certificate to confirm the proper person was taking the assessment and that there was no visible outside assistance.

In-person supervision

Organizations may arrange for officials or prospective referees to take an assessment under the organization’s own in-person supervision. This option is available when the assessment does not require Virtual Monitoring.

Questions and Time Limit

Each assessment draws 20 questions randomly from its question bank and presents them in order of increasing difficulty, using terminology from the applicable rule book. The assessment has a 15-minute time limit to help discourage outside assistance. Most participants report that this provides sufficient time. Administrators may request that the time limit be suspended.
